Greg Weisman is an American writer and producer for television animation. He is occasionally a voice actor and voice director as well as a comic book writer. He is best known for creating the Disney animated series Gargoyles as well as being supervising producer of The Spectacular Spider-Man and is currently producer of Young Justice. He did voice casting and was voice director of Atlantis: Milo's Return and did the same for the unproduced Team Atlantis television series, to which he also wrote a crossover episode with Gargoyles.

Career[]

Greg Weisman was previously an English composition and writing teacher, having received degrees at Stanford University and University of Southern California, before venturing into comics and animation.

In the late 1980s, when he was just 22-years-old, he had been commissioned to write a four-issue mini-series for DC Comics starring Black Canary. The first issue was being illustrated when the series was shelved due to it conflicting with the release of the series Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters by Mike Grell, which would feature the character. Elements from the abandoned story would be used in the DC Showcase: Green Arrow short film. Despite the set back with Black Canary, Weisman would become an editor and co-writer on the third volume of Captain Atom with Cary Bates, which ran from March 1987 to September 1991.

It was also in 1991 that an executive from Disney met him. He was brought on board to help on shows such as DuckTales, Raw Toonage, and Bonkers.

In 1994, Disney broadcast Gargoyles through syndication and it became an immediate hit once the 13-episode first season had completed. Hoping to develop at least double the amount of episodes for the second season, he and his staff were taken by surprise when Disney commissioned them to instead make four-times the amount, allowing for them a lot more room to explore the series universe. However, the third season, dubbed "The Goliath Chronicles," was marred with major staff and writer changes that Weisman does not consider it canon outside of the season premiere episode "The Journey," which he wrote himself. Disney would cancel the series following its third series due to poor ratings and its inability to compete with commercial rival Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

Regardless of the change in direction to Gargoyles, Weisman returned to Disney doing freelance work on shows such as Kim Possible, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, W.I.T.C.H., and Team Atlantis, which ended up coming Atlantis: Milo's Return. At present, he has started to work more for Warner Bros. Animation in adapting DC Comics properties.

In addition to working on numerous other animation projects within and outside Disney, he also returned to comic books, writing a story in JLA Showcase #1 that featured a parody of the Gargoyles characters. In 2005, Slave Labour Graphics announced they would be publishing a series proper Gargoyles series with Weisman writing how the series would have continued after the second season. Weisman would also develop a spin-off series Bad Guys before both were forced to be suspended in 2008 due to Disney increasing its licensing fees. Despite Disney recently acquiring Marvel Comics, which had previously published a series of Gargoyles comic books during the show's initial television run, SLG is hopeful they will being the series back.

Personal Life[]

Greg is married to wife Beth since 1991. They have two children, Erin in 1995 and son Benny in 1997. He is the older brother of Jon Weisman, who himself has worked on numerous animated shows as a writer including Disney's Hercules, W.I.T.C.H., and Young Justice.
